Sgt. Albert Ernest Astbury

Sgt. Albert Ernest Astbury, formerly of the Royal Artillery, served with No.4 Troop of No.6 Commando.

Sgt. Albert Astbury had joined with No.4 Troop of No.6 Commando on 10th April 1945 as a reinforcement just before the Aller river crossing, and was unfortunately Killed In Action (KIA) on 11th April 1945, aged 36 years.

Albert was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Astbury, of West Hartlepool, Co. Durham, and was laid to rest in Celle War Cemetery (Celle, Niedersachsen, Germany). Grave 3.F.8.

The inscription on his headstone reads:

‘He leaves a white unbroken glory. A gathered radiance. Rupert Brookes’
